The north eastern corner of South Africa, is an area known as ‘the lowveld’, which is home to a world famous private game reservce steeped in history, rich in wildlife diversity, and blessed with safari camps offering wildlife experiences like no other – The Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve.
An exciting new Wild Eye photo safari experience will showcase the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve to you like no other has done before. In November 2018, two of the finest camps in the reserve will play host to this unique safari – Mala Mala & Londolozi – camps that go above and beyond what’s expected to produce the finest game viewing experiences possible.
MalaMala Private Game Reserve
MalaMala Game Reserve was the very first safari camp dating back to as early as 1927, who laid the foundation to what the safari industry is today. It is now the largest private big five game reserve in South Africa comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), sharing a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park. It lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve offering the most spectacular game viewing South Africa has to offer.
For nearly nine decades, the custodians of the MalaMala land have remained focused to preserve and protect this special piece of Africa. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of unrivaled wildlife viewing and breathtaking animal encounters.
Londolozi Private Game Reserve
Londolozi, which is also one of South Africa’s original private game reserves, is considered to be a a pillar of global ecotourism. As a proudly family run business, the Varty family of Londolozi emphasize a commitment to luxurious accommodation, fine cuisine and exceptional service. Yet it’s the leopards of Londolozi that make this safari destination world famous for its wildlife. Over the course of three decades, a unique relationship has developed between rangers and trackers and generations of wild leopards. Intimate leopard sightings are frequent, an experience that many would agree is a pinnacle life experience.
The Londolozi photographic safari is where ancient wisdom, modern technology and nature converge. Londolozi has long been recognised as a superb location for wildlife photography and film-making, specialising in the big cats. Incredible light, diverse scenery and a plethora of African wildlife set the stage for unsurpassed photographic theatre.
Across the 10 night, 11 day trip, we’ll spend quality time with many of Africa’s most sought-after animals.
The Sabi Sands is well known for incredible Big 5 viewing, including sightings of cheetah and wild dog, and this is most evident at Mala Mala & Londolozi alike. Several lion prides call the region home, and leopard are particularly abundant. Elephant herds are often found along the banks of the Sand River, large herds of buffalo often found moving through the open plains, and the reserve is one of few remaining strongholds for ever-decreasing rhino populations.
In addition to this, the safari has been strategically scheduled so that it takes place during the height of the lowveld area pre-rain season. This is a dramatic time of year to experience the Sabi Sands as animals are dependent on drinking water on a daily basis. With water supplies at an all time low, every game drive has the ability to produce something exciting. Predators stake out remaining waterholes, hunting opportunistically, which will be a key focus of our daily safaris.
