Description

Come be a part of a different yet incredible safari experience. The Kgalagadi (Kalahari) Desert is a malaria free area & is a large arid to semi-arid sandy area in Southern Africa extending 900,000 square kilometers, covering 84% of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. Despite these arid conditions, the Kgalagadi is rich in fauna of great variety which offers premium game viewing, breathtaking landscapes and phenomenal stargazing.

There are two large dry riverbeds, the Auob & Nossob Rivers. They have well established water holes along them where we will probably spend 70% of our time due to the fact that these areas attract large numbers of desert plains game and predators. These riverbeds show off animals at a premium and with their proximity to the game drive roads, it makes them an ideal close-up vantage point & provides excellent photographic opportunities.

There are roughly sixty mammals species that have been recorded in the park. The predators are the area’s largest attraction with an excellent chances of seeing leopard, brown & spotted hyena, jackal, wildcat & the ultimate black-maned lion are all well represented. The area is one of Africa’s best parks to view cheetah who thrive by hunting in its fossil river valleys and the surrounding Kgalagadi dunes. You will also get to see large herd of antelope including the majestic gemsbok, blue wildebeest, springbok, red hartebeest, eland and steenbok. Smaller animals, such as the ground squirrel and the mischievous suricates, approximately 300 species of birds species will also show their faces but the Honey Badger, Pangolin, Aardwark & Bat-eared Fox are some of the “specials” in the park worth searching for.

Lodging

We will make use of the Ta Shebube’s lodges which offer a unique desert safari that delves deep into the Kgalagadi. The lodge is called Rooiputs & is located within the captivating Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on the Botswana side, 25 km north of Two Rivers (Twee Rivieren) & is situated just off the predator-rich Nossob valley, perched along a mature red sand dune, overlooking a busy water hole.

Rooiputs is one of only two upscale lodge options in the park, & with its stunning location that overlooks the dunes and a watering hole makes it a very special place. The main lodge area and the rooms are stylishly appointed and spotlessly clean. Spending time relaxing in these spaces while taking in the beautiful scenery will probably be one of many highlights.

Each chalet is set on an expansive wooden deck and constructed out of a clever mix of wood, thatch, canvas and glass. The chalets consist of a sleeping area with double or twin beds, a sitting area and en-suite bathroom with his and hers basin, toilet, an outside shower and an expansive veranda screened from the next door neighbour.
