The white world of Svalbard makes for incredible, sometimes almost ethereal, photography.

The fact that the king of the arctic roams in a land that is made up of snow and ice should tell you that the visual drama begs of you to create images and to capture these incredible moments.

As we approached this large male on a zodiac boat I knew that our low angle would tell the story of size.  The white snow in the foreground and bright clouds in the background enveloped the polar bear in a white haze which shows both the harsh and fragile nature of a disappearing world.

The direct eye contact created the necessary connection with my subject and the small stain of blood on his chin adds just that little bit of drama, subtle as it may be, to the image.

All in all the image makes for a portrait of a predator

The white world of Svalbard makes for incredible, sometimes almost ethereal, photography.

Until next time.
